For those of you who didn’t watch, here’s how the whole thing played out:

Glenn Weiss won the award for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special for his work directing the Oscars.

When he got on stage to accept the award, he started his speech by thanking his two daughters and went on to say that the win was “bittersweet” for him, as his mother had just passed two weeks prior.
“Part of my heart is broken, I don’t think it will ever be repaired, but she’s in me and she always will be, — Mom always believed in finding the sunshine in things and she adored my girlfriend Jan. Jan, you are the sunshine in my life, and mom was right, don’t ever let go of your sunshine.” He then paused, and said “You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend — because I want to call you my wife.”

The audience was shocked, they cheered as Jan Svendsen walked up to the stage and watched as Glen dropped to one knee and properly proposed to his “sunshine” — the whole thing was very sweet to watch

Oh, and as a bonus, the ring he proposed with is the same ring his father proposed to his late mother with. He made sure to let his brothers & sisters at home know that he had in fact gotten permission to use the ring.
